    Fireplace and Chimney Conversion Ideas

    By Camille | blog | 0 comment | 14 October, 2019 | 0

There are many reasons for wanting to remove a chimney. You might not need it anymore, it is not functioning as it should, or you just want to reclaim the space for other purposes. However, removing the stacks and the breast of the chimney is a complicated process which can potentially compromise the structural integrity of your home. Before you start demolishing your chimney, you might want to consider keeping the construction and converting it into something useful.

Before converting the fireplace, do a thorough cleaning of the whole structure. Remember to remove all traces of accelerants. Then seal off the chimney to improve insulation and to ensure that nothing can enter the chimney that may cause clogging or damage. Once the preparation is completed, you can now convert the fireplace to a more functional space. Here are some ideas:

You can add some wood paneling and inset shelves and turn your old fireplace into a bookshelf. Converting an old fireplace into a bookshelf works whether your fireplace is in the living room, bedroom or any part of your home. It doesn’t have to be just books, you can use it to store your board games or stack your collection of DVDs and CDs and other collectibles.

If you love to entertain or simply love wine, converting an old fireplace to a wine rack could be a good option. Customised wine caddies or racks can be built into the fireplace to turn it into a beautiful and functional wine storage nook. For chilled drinks, stack a refrigerated wine cooler or a mini-fridge so that you can also hold other cocktails, spirited water and snacks for your gatherings.

Extra storage is always welcome, especially for common rooms like the living area. Converting your non-functioning fireplace to a storage is a convenient solution. You can install storage bins or boxes for game consoles and children’s toys, this way, the children can easily put things back when they finish playing. The storage can also hold additional cushions and blankets for the family to use during game or movie night.

An old fireplace can be converted into a decorative piece.  You can add logs or wood to imitate the look of a functioning fireplace. You can add picture frames and little ornaments to showcase your family’s adventures. The fireplace can be used as a backdrop for a vase of flowers or an interesting work of art to add to the aesthetics if the room. Or you can put candles or plants to achieve a Zen look.

As you can see, there are countless options you can do to transform your old fireplace and make use of the space. But if these ideas don’t appeal to you and prefer to remove the old structure to free up valuable space, that’s a great option too. Just remember, removing a chimney is a complicated task that needs to be handled by trained contractors. Whether you are converting a fireplace or removing chimney, make sure you are working with experienced and reliable contractor.
